STORAGE PACKING TIPS
There is no better time than the present to complete a fridge tidy up & if done regularly it shouldn’t take you too long.
Before we can commence organising your fridge with plastic storage, you firstly need to do a complete audit of all the items in your fridge.
Completely empty the contents of the fridge and sort through the items by used by dates. In the instance of fresh food & leftover food I would determine when they should be used by and categorise accordingly.
If you are finding lots of half full condiments, juices, milks, etc then consider throwing them out. You will be surprised how many condiments you have in the fridge that are either past their used by date or closely approaching their best before or used by dates.
“Best before” dates refer to quality, not safety. They tell you how long a product will retain its freshness and flavour.
“Packaged on” dates, mandatory for meat, tell you the day the fresh food was packaged in the store.
“Use by” and “expiry” dates mean the product should be eaten by the date listed. If these dates on refrigerated food have passed, it’s safer to discard them.
Now that the fridge is completely empty give the fridge a complete wipe down the shelves, trays, borders & seals with antibacterial spray like your spray and wipe or sugar soap.
Now we can start the re-organizing of your fridge with the products left over.
Organise the fridge to have any meats on the bottom tray (this is to avoid any juices from the meat spilling or leaking onto fresh food that can contaminate it and cause you to fall ill.
I would also suggest using plastic food containers to store your meat in to further avoid leakages from occurring.
To organise cold meats, fruit & leftover food I would recommend storing them in a store, freeze, heat and serve plastic food container as they are versatile and allow you to reheat your left over food or freeze your left over food and is dishwasher safe too.
Another suggestion I can provide is to have a clear plan with of meals for the week. This way you can prioritise your fridge to position foods that are getting eaten first at the front of the fridge and foods intended for later in the week at the back.
It also allows you to be a little smarter when putting leftover food into the fridge as you can associate the meal with the day of the week you ate it easier.
